Have you ever given a thought to flying a single place helicopter made from a kit that can climb up to 6,000 feet mean sea level (3,000 meters) and cruise at 55 knots (100 kilometers per hour)? I know you have probably not given this much thought. I love aviation and I am always interested in the latest in aircraft technology. I discovered the Mosquito XE kit helicopter a little while back and I think this is a cool aircraft.
The Mosquito XE is a helicopter that can ether be bought as a kit and assembled or the helicopter can be purchased as a factory built machine. The Mosquito XEL is actually the Ultralight version. The Mosquito XE is not and ultralight aircraft and therefore requires a private pilot's license with a helicopter rating to fly. In the United States an aircraft that is considered an ultralight does is not registered with the FAA as a certified aircraft and therefore no pilot's license is required. However, most manufacture's of kit helicopters will not even sell their aircraft to anyone until the buyer shows proof of training and in many cases the training must show proof of a solo endorsement. This is a very good thing because helicopters are dangerous in the hands of untrained owners.
I like the Mosquito XE. I would prefer to have a helicopter rating before I would even think of flying this aircraft and That is why I like the XE model. The empty weight of this helicopter is 298 lbs (134 kilograms It has a gross weight of 610 lbs (275 kilograms). It holds 12 gallons of fuel (45 liters). It burns about 4.5 gallons per hour (17 liters per hour). It has a flying range of up to 150 miles (240 kilometers). The Mosquito XE285 Is basically the same helicopter but with a larger engine. It has an empty weight of 360 lbs (162 kilograms) and a gross weight of 720 lbs (324 kilograms). The XE 285 has a cruise speed of 70 knots (129 kilometers per hour).
Hopefully the mosquito helicopters prove to be both safe and fun to fly. Time will tell. Thanks for reading and have a great day.
