The movie ‘The Eternal Sunshine on a Spotless Mind’ seems impossible to happen right now but it could be possible in the near future!
Researchers have recently found the gene that could replace bad memories with a good one. The research was done in Massachusetts Institute of Technology and they actually focused on the study of erasing the ‘bad’ memories. If this study would be a success, it would greatly benefit those people who have post traumatic stress disorder or (PTSD).
FINDING THE MEMORY GENE
They did their studies on mice. The sacrificed the poor mice and put them in a cage and gave them ‘small’ electric shock to condition them to fear. Imagine, receiving a painful electric shock so often in a place you think you’d be safe. Due to this, the mice became stressed whenever they see the cage. After all the pain that they received, who wouldn’t feel stressed seeing the place where you experienced so much pain? After all the “fear” conditioning, the scientists this time focused on replacing the bad memory with a good one. So, they did that and then they put the mice on the same cage but this time the mice didn’t feel stressed at all.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
I made a further research on this and found out that the gene does not erase the memory but replace it with a good one. Though it does not totally erase the memory, it could still help in manipulating the person’s memory and the understanding on how to replace the bad memories of the person with good ones.
DO YOU WANT TO ERASE YOUR BAD MEMORIES?
There are things that we might have regret in our lives but I believe those things made us who we are. If we are not really suffering to PSTD, I guess some bad memories such as failure and embarrassment can help us become a person.
IS IT SAFE? IS IT A GOOD IDEA?
I’m not sure about it. I’m a bit afraid of this ‘memory gene’ study. What if some crazy scientists erase all the memories of the person and replace them? That would be scary. This kind of study should be closely monitored by the authorities so that it can be used only for a good cause.
