Coffee connoisseurs may be shocked to learn that the number one selling coffee in America is not Starbucks or Gavalia, but old standard, Folgers. According to data compiled by the international news service, Bloomberg, Folgers is the country’s leading brand, with an average 15.6 percent share of the U.S. market. Maxwell House came in second with 10 percent. Private labels ranked third, followed by Green Mountain with 4.3 percent. Starbucks held only 3.3 percent.

Manufactured and sold by J.M. Smucker, the jelly company, additional coffee labels under the Smucker's brand include Dunkin' Donuts and Millstone, which I have to think accounts for much of their high sales volume. To its credit, Folgers has made an effort to tap into the gourmet coffee market by offering some enticing flavored coffees such a Chocolate Silk, Vanilla Biscotti, and Moca Swirl, as well as couple of brands of Cappuccino. I also feel that the economical price is another reason why Folgers holds such a large market share in the coffee industry. Obviously, there are better tasting coffees on the market, but they are also often much more expensive.

Maybe I'm a coffee snob, but I would rather spend a couple of extra dollars for a more satisfying cup of coffee to start my day. Folgers may the number one selling coffee in America due to a number of factors including price, name recognition, and efforts to tap into the gourmet market, but Mountain grown or not, I prefer the really good stuff.
