I saw the new Kraft Recipe Makers cooking sauces on the shelf at Wal Mart and decided to give it a try. I like anything I can put in the crock pot and the Chicken Cacciatore called out to me. This line has at least 8 other flavors, such as Hickory BBQ Beef, Three Cheese Chicken Florentine, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Asian Fish Tacos and New England Pot Roast.
In the box are two sauces. The lemon oregano simmer sauce is in a bottle and the tomato & italian herb sauce is in a large pouch. You need two pounds of chicken breast or a combination of chicken breast and thighs (I used a little less than two pounds of chicken breast), a green pepper cut into strips, 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms (I used no-salt-added canned mushrooms) and your own pasta. I also added a can of drained, diced no-salt-added tomatoes. The next step is to put the lemon oregano sauce in the bottom of the crock pot, then the chicken and vegetables. Turn the chicken to coat it with the lemon oregano sauce then top with the pouch of cooking sauce, cover the crock pot and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or high for 4 to 6 hours. Cook your pasta during the last 15 minutes, then top the pasta with the chicken and vegetable mixture.I didn't know what to expect. I know that when I have made Chicken Cacciatore from scratch in the past I did not have any type of lemon ingredient. But the combination of all of the flavors in this dish, including the lemon, are DELICIOUS. I could eat this once a week and never get tired of it. There are a lot of flavors going on here - tomato, lemon, oregano, other italian herbs - but the combination is as tasty as you can get and is zesty without being sour and is italian without being too garlicky. Next time I would add maybe even more diced tomatoes, definitely double the amount of mushrooms and maybe add a little more green pepper strips. The sauce is not thick, and that could be because I added the diced tomatoes.
This is supposed to make 8 servings, and each serving is 1/4 cup of the sauces. That includes 60 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 310 mg. of sodium (13% of the RDA), 9 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber and less than 1 gram of protein. One serving, though, is more than 1/4 cup because that is not a very big serving. My boyfriend and I each had a medium-sized plate of this and there is enough for us to have a meal again tomorrow night, so do not count on getting 8 servings from this. Overall I highly recommend this. It is easy and delicious.
I paid $2.98 for this at Wal Mart.
