In many Western countries, cemeteries are always somber as they are considered as special places of death. But in Mexico, there is a holiday namely “The day of the Dead” to celebrate persons who passed away.
In Mexico, The day of the Dead takes place on November 1 and 2. On these days, the whole family and friends gather and visit the graves of the dead people. They clean the graves, add new fresh flowers, especially the marigolds. Besides, people bring to the cemeteries sugar skulls (the picture below), favorite food and beverages of the departed as special gifts.
In the celebration, the cemetery become bustling and full of colors. People pray for and remember family members who died, besides they eat, chat and play together. The way they acknowledge death besides life in the cemeteries is just interesting.
Although the holiday is particularly celebrated in Mexico as a national holiday, it also occurs around the world in other countries. There are same observances in European countries. The similarly themed celebrations appear in a lot of African and Asian cultures. KALLISTA
