I noticed the new Campbell's Slow Cooker Sauces at Wal Mart. The flavors sounded great - Moroccan Spice, Hawaiian Laua, Sweet Korean BBQ, Tavern Style Pot Roast, Mexican Red Chile Taco. I came across the Apple Bourbon BBQ and since I had a $1 off coupon, decided to give this a try.
It's very easy to make this. Just put a 2 to 3 pound pork roast in the slow cooker, cover with the entire pouch of sauce (do not add water), and cook on high for 5 to 6 hours. That is what I did, except that I seasoned my pork roast a bit first with salt, pepper and garlic powder before I added the BBQ sauce. Then I just poured the sauce over the roast and let it cook on high for 6 hours.
One serving is 1/2 cup, which contains 60 calories, no fat and 15 grams of carbohydrates. The entire pouch contains 13 oz. of sauce.Once the 6 hours was up, I shredded the pork roast and mixed it in with the BBQ sauce, which was somewhat thin in consistency. The meat seemed to soak up some of the sauce and it ended up being less runny than I thought it would be. I served the pulled pork on a good quality bun and we sat down to eat. And I couldn't believe it when I took my first bite and discovered that this sauce is really close to flavorless. Where is the brown sugar flavor? The apple flavor? The bourbon flavor? Umm....where's the BBQ flavor?!? It was just sort of a non-descript, boring, watered-down, weak sweet flavor that really wasn't even BBQ-ish. I had to get out a bottle of another BBQ sauce to add to the pork and Campbell's Slow Cooker Sauce to make it taste good.
This was really disappointing and I will not buy this again. I don't recommend it at all. The only good thing about this is that if you DO like it, it will make at least eight sandwiches or so.
I paid $1.98 for this at my local Wal Mart, minus a $1 off coupon, bringing the total to $0.98.
