Ten of Borneo pygmy elephants, an endangered subspecies, were found dead by conservation officers in the Malaysian state of Sheba, on the island of Borneo. It is suspected that the animals were poisoned.
The estimate of the experts is that there are still 1500's Borneo pygmy elephants in the wild, mostly in that region. The subspecies is the smallest among the Asian elephants. Deforestation, hunting and closer contact with humans are their main threats.
According to Nathan, a person who watched this sad scenario, "It was very sad to see all those dead elephants, especially a female who had a tiny puppy, about three months old. The cub was trying to wake the dead mother '
