Every year, Gaylord Resorts puts on an amazing Christmas event that has won awards and it an annual destination for many people. Know as ICE!, the Gaylord fills a walk-through dome with more than two million pounds of expertly carved ice sculptures and displays. Visitors can walk through this wonderland of colored, clear and LED-lit ice that has been carved to resemble popular movie and book characters. There are even ice slides for kids and kids-at-heart to slip and slide down. Past themes include Dr. Seuss, Charlie Brown, Madagascar and Shrek.
The Gaylord National, in National Harbor, Maryland (just south of Washington, D.C.) is going back to the classics with their 2013 theme. They are retelling Clement Moore's beloved poem 'Twas the Night Before Christmas as only the Gaylord and ICE! creators can. Ma in her kerchief and Pa in his cap, along with all of the sugar plum fairies you can imagine are just a few of the scenes visitors will find at the 2013 ICE! attraction.
It is not necessary to spend the night at the Gaylord to enjoy the frigid fun of ICE! All four Gaylord Hotels put on their own version of ICE! and have plenty of overnight packages for those that do wish to stay. New this year: Overnight guests get unlimited access to the ICE! attraction for the length of their stay.
Worried about the cold? It is a balmy nine degrees, after all (yes, 9 degrees). The Gaylord provides nice, big blue parkas for everyone to wear. I do suggest hats, gloves and big, furry boots.
