On the heels of Chick-fil-A's president speaking out against gay marriage, a Denver-area cake shop has taken the stance a step further.
Masterpiece Cake Shop in Lakewood has refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple's wedding, sparking an outrage among the area's gay community, who have called for a boycott against the bakery.
Owner Jack Phillips told sister station KCNC that he has no animosity towards the gay community, and is simply refusing because he doesn't support gay marriage.
"If gays come in and want to order birthday cakes or any cakes for any occasion, graduations or whatever, I have no prejudice against that whatsoever. It's just the wedding cake, not the people, not their lifestyle," Phillips said.
But many in the community say Phillips' refusal is exactly that: discriminating against the lifestyle of gay individuals.
"I feel a need to disclose to anyone with an 'alternative' lifestyle that this company does not want your business, as they do not participate in making cakes for 'illegal' things such as a commitment ceremony," one woman wrote on the company's yelp.com page.
A group has established an online petition calling for a boycott against the bakery.
"We need to send a message to them that in this day and age, bigotry cannot and will not be tolerated," the petition reads. It has 2,125 signatures.
Beyond the Internet, KCNC reports that Phillips has received 1,000 angry messages about his stance.
Similar with the furor surrounding Chick-fil-A, some in the local community are applauding Phillips, ordering cakes from the shop specifically because of his position on gay marriage.
Even some protesters say they don't want to see the shop close down, but simply change their policy.
“I support local business, I think it’s really important to our community to support local business,” protester Cate Owen told KCNC. "I think we should want them to change...it's not like we want to shut them down."
Dozens of protesters swarmed the building Saturday, and have planned a bigger protest for next weekend.
Now allow me to play the devil's advocate !!!!!!!
A business owner has and enforces rules about smoking, wearing shoes & shirts, and not selling alcohol to minors. Why should he be expected to sell a product to someone who he knows is breaking the law? How would people feel if a pedophile ordered a cake celebrating his love of a favorite child? Would the shop-owner be expected to look the other way and make the cake anyway? Why should this situation be any different? Even if gay marriage becomes legal in Colorado, it is against God's law, and in our country, no one, in business or otherwise, should be forced to act in opposition to the law of God. If we come to the point in society where we must choose between man's immoral law and God's righteous law as found in the Holy Bible, the "freedom" that has always been the pride of our country will be completely gone. Sadly, it appears as though homosexual activists won't be satisfied until they have taken away everyone's freedoms except their own.
What ever happened to stand up for what you believe in? Even if it is not what others believe. Why are people making a big hoop la over this whole gay thing?
If some one stands up for what they believe in then who are you to say it wrong, and vice versa ? At lease they have the balls to stand up for something to be a a leader instead of a follower. Isn't it better to stand for some thing rather to fall for anything. Why cant people agree to dis agree and keep it moving ?
