Cats will stay off furniture if it smells of oranges. I used it to break my cat from scratching my leather couch.

The friend I heard this from was using it for a cleaner, and put whole sliced citrus fruit in the vinegar, then strained it out. We are into our third batch, but it is done from straight peels. I have used it to clean up kitty messes on a wooden floor and the citrus oil seems to give the wood a pleasant glow as well. I have heard that used on your animals it repels fleas and on counter tops it repels ants and spiders. I know I like it really well. We have used vinegar for years.

Thank you for posting this advice. Having three dogs and two cats, I certainly needed to hear this.

&Ldyjarhead I like the smell of oranges, too, but I more often have fresh lemons on hand. I freeze the peels to freshen the food disposal, but I think I'll try a few in vinegar, too.

I knew there was a reason I didn't want to throw out the orange peels the other day! I wonder if you could do that with lemon, too.

&Jaipi , I've done the vinegar spray bottle thing for years and years, but only recently started using the orange too within the last few months. I'll never go back. It really helps to get rid of that stale smell after running the vacuum, too.

&Writer_Katie , it really does help clear the air, especially the spray bottle.

&Kimagine , I like that smell too, but I'm too cheap to even use the electricity required, and that would also require watching so it didn't boil off.

I like to simmer peels with cinnamon and cloves on the back burner of my stove. Wonderful!

I will have to try this..I'm always on the lookout for scents that will freshen my home. I wonder if I could do this with apple peels and a sprinkle of cinnamon---apple cinnamon is one of my favorite scents!

That is such a great idea, and I'm going to start doing it TODAY. I have three indoor cats and sometimes the house smells like it, if you know what I mean. :)

I love this! I have a spray bottle filled with it that I use to clean with. It's dual purpose now!
