I’ve been growing flowers and vegetables in hay bales for several years. Although I have met some success with this technique, I’ve also had some failures. Cherry tomatoes do wonderful in my hay bales, but my full size tomatoes all suffered from blossom end rot. I suspect this is due to the difficulty with keeping the hay bales moist enough for my tomatoes. If you want to try gardening in hay bales, I’d suggest using a soaker hose to keep the insides of the bales moist.
