Thousands of people are taking up arms in a rebellion against the Ukrainian government and its president, Victor Yanukocich. The revolt begun because of the president's decision to turn down trade agreement with the EU that has been in the making for quite some time. The riots are turning violent, with clubs and rocks, as well as Molotov cocktails, being flung at police officers.
It is really quite frightening to see this happening. I actually used to live in Ukraine myself for a few years, and I visited Kiev many times. It is strange to see how much the streets have transformed. The place where the demonstrations are happening, Independence Square, is a place that I visited once or twice. Apparently the riots were initiated by an extreme nationalistic faction of Ukraine. They turned more violent and deadly after the parliament of Ukraine passed some laws prohibiting active protests. These laws have since been repealed in an attempt to simmer down the opposition.
