&loveofnight -I've fixed my car numerous times for that reason. Considering the result of it going to the shop, may make that decision change.

i haven't driven my truck in almost a month but it is going in the shop soon, it's a big bill so i had to make sure that i had all the money. i refuse to replace a good truck simply because it is getting old and need repairs.

&julieanne -sorry about that, I meant to say cities. There are a lot if rural areas with no public transportation. City public transportation seems more efficient in Euope, in ways though.

No need to have a car in the UK? I can't agree with that. I'm from the UK and always have to hire a car when I go there, most of my friends and family in the UK have cars also. I live in France and have and need a car.

But, that aside, I hope that your car woes have been cured! Cars and computers are just great - until they break down!

I can't go wrong living in NYC or right in Jersey City... unless you count the high cost of living lol

&russkeith -I wish I lived close enough to my workplace to do that.

&JudyE -Me too.

&JG11Bravo -I don't and hope that its a minor issue and not the whole thing. That'd set me back almost double what my car is worth.

&acrogodess -That's awesome though! My city has places you can do that, but not in my part.

Not particularly. I've always lived where I can catch buses, trains, walk or call a cab.

Trust me, you do not want to have to replace a steering rack. If that is the issue, then the advice you got is good.

I hope this doesn't cost you an arm and a leg.

Good luck with your car. Growing up my dad rode his bike to work when possible and I often wish we lived a more bicycle friendly place.

&GreatMartin -It was stolen 4 times? Where did you live that kids did that kind of thing? I bet she was a beauty, but not having a car can mean big savings if you live in the right area. My grandmother has an oldsmobile whose door is broken. The mechanics have been looking 2 months for a new part to fix it and can't find any. Luckily, she has another car.

&DreamtoDreams -It's not at the point I need to be concerned (my brother is a mechanic), but I wouldn't drive it anywhere else other than to the mechanics tomorrow morning. I'm leaving early, so I shouldn't hit traffic either.

&bobo2500 -Hope it doesn't have any more problems. The problems always come in clumps (cars).

&Seren3 -Me too. Hopefully its not a serious fix.

&acrogodess -I know a couple people in the same boat. Are you interested in getting one?

&Izzyskylar -Luckily my brother is a mechanic so he can give advice and fix minor problems when I'm home. Sadly, he's two hours away now and can't fix it.

I had a red convertible 1974 chevy that I bought in 1981--after 23 years I had to get rid of it---I am still crying today even if I do save $3,000 a year not having a car--it was a beauty! I know what you mean about parts startignt o break--I had a choice of either playing the radio or using the lighter (I smoked at that time)-- window motors would fail--one at a time!!! And with a convertible top it was always somethign with the arms--plus it was stolen 4 times (kids taking it for a joy ride until the gas ran out) so I had to get new steering columns---and parts for these old cars were running out!!!

I don't know if you should drive it to the mechanic if it is acting up so seriously. It might not be safe.

Best of luck with the car. My truck had a little phase in the fall where everything seemed to be breaking but we're all good now.
