I have been a car commuter for almost 50 years. I usually drive at (or a bit over) the posted speed limit. In those years, I have often observed cars racing past me only to arrive at a stop-light or parking lot 4-5 seconds before I do. What was the rush all about?

Why do some people drive much faster – even dangerously faster – to arrive at their destination just a few seconds sooner? Is it simply poor judgment or unmanaged impulsivity? Maybe the driver needs to go the bathroom rally badly and feels that those few seconds are critical! Could the driver be a person who gets off on speed? Whatever the answer, the behavior is strikingly inefficient and is best avoided.
