The Lion King is one of Disney's best films and Elton John's soundtrack helps to being the characters to life. But he wasn't the producers' first choice for the job. They originally wanted ABBA to do the music but Benny Anderson was busy working on a music and the idea fell through. Just as well, because I can't imagine Swedish pop being suitable for the jungle.
Also, they originally had Timon and Pumba singing Can You Feel the Love Tonight which would have been a lot less emotional, I imagine.
Speaking of The Lion King, the traumatising stampede scene was done in CGI and took animators three years. It's quite remarkable to see how fat animations has come in the last decade.
