Every year we make a special non-candy treat for the senior citizens in our local area. My son loves making the craft and each year he gets better at not being so timid to hand the treats out to them. The seniors LOVE visitors and really enjoy getting a little special treat from the kids. Another special treat is getting the kids dressed up in their costumes because the seniors loved to guess what they are and it gives them something to talk about with the kids.
We have done this by ourselves and as a group of kids. Either way works and it really depends on what the care home allows. Some places can't do large crowds and then I just tell the mothers to schedule a separate time to go visit. It has become a fall tradition to start visiting around the holidays and it is easier to continue the tradition of bringing a treat around ALL the holidays through out the year.
